The Guardian Australia's Katharine Murphy calls for 'serious focus' on Newstart

The Guardian Australia’s political editor Katharine Murphy calls for an increase in Newstart to support long-term unemployed on ABC Insiders with Barry Cassidy.

I just want to hang a lantern over Newstart. The economy is improving, obviously, more money coming into the coffers. There'll be a debate about raising Newstart at the Federal Labor conference later in the year. I think the Government needs to engage with this issue seriously. It's not just because I'm a bleeding heart, although obviously I am. There are very hard-headed economic reasons for why you need to increase that benefit in order to have long-term unemployed people more able to deal with going to job interviews, getting prepared for job interviews. It's appalling where it is now and we need some serious focus to change it.
